I was talking to Bill some on the internet about the reunion in 2010 and he was really interested in finding out about his friend and classmate John(Buster) Beier's death. I did not know he was so ill and I was really looking forward to seeing him at our 2010 40th year reunion.
Melody sent me this e-mail, we will miss Bill dearly:
----------------------------------------------
William J. Young II
HAMPTON - William (Bill) Joseph Young II, 57, passed from this life July 28, 2009, after a long illness.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 10, 1951, Bill was the first of seven children born to William and Maureen Young. Growing up in an Air Force family, he lived in Germany, Minnesota, South Carolina, South Vietnam, and Virginia. Bill graduated from Denbigh High School in 1970, lettering in football, wrestling, baseball and was recognized by his senior class as the 'friendliest" senior. He attended Ferrum Junior College and Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, class of 1974, majoring in Speech Communications and playing in Xavier's last year of Division I football.
After graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and received his commission as a 2LT. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Okinawa, Japan. After serving his country, he continued his public service with the New Orleans Police Department, Newport News Police Department and the Prince William County Sheriff's Department, and ultimately settling into his true love of teaching; working for the Virginia Public School System in West Point and Hampton. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Maureen Young of Newport News, Va.
Bill is survived by brothers, Paul Young of Newport News, Brian Young of Loveland, Colo., Christopher Young of Galax, Va., Patrick Young of Williamsburg, Va.; sisters, Maura Burns of Hewitt, Texas, and Shelagh Young of Williamsburg; a number of sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. Bill's extended family included Herman "Gus" and Nancy Diggs of Hampton, who lovingly cared for him for many years. He also leaves behind many very close friends, whom Bill loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at St. Jerome Catholic Church.
In memory of Bill, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association , Peninsula Chapter, 870 Greenbrier Circle, Suite 404, Greenbrier Tower II, Chesapeake, VA 23320.

I was fortunate to have reconnected with Bill before the last reunion. He still had that twinkle in his eyes even though he was going through some rough times then. Another good guy is gone. |

Still remember his field goal that gave us our one victory (which was later taken away)...he was about as happy as I ever saw him that night. GB Bill.... |
